As we approach the end of another year it is a time to reflect on all we are grateful for and all the blessings we have. Two years ago we came to you, our members and sponsors, in an effort to match the grant we receive for our spay/neuter program and it was a huge success. Donations exceeded $7,000.00, which more than doubled the funds specifically allocated to the program.
Last year we asked for donations to help with much needed repairs to the ARC. Thanks to you we received donations in excess of $10,000.00! Because of this we have had a new pump house built which will prevent the pipes from freezing. We are currently in the process of having a new roof put on the building and the electric upgraded. These repairs should help improve the conditions for the cats in our care by stopping water from leaking into the building and preventing the circuits from tripping when we run the air conditioning or use the washer/dryer. For this we are eternally grateful and thank you for your continued support!
This year the SMAWL Board of Directors has decided to come to you with a request to help pay for the continued medical needs of the animals in our care. As you are aware, each animal we place for adoption is current with vaccinations, altered, microchipped, and on flea and heartworm prevention; our adoption fees are designed to cover the cost of this. However, some of our animals need more than the basics and to date we have been able to provide them with additional treatment as recommended. Many of our animals (both dogs and cats) have undergone dental cleanings thanks to SMAWL; in addition, some of our dogs have come to us heartworm positive – while the treatment is difficult for the dogs, it is essential for them to get back to health.
Recently Banjo came to us with a severe ear infection that was treated with antibiotics and a deep cleaning under anesthesia. Jubilee had an ear polyp that needed to be removed; Dmitri came to use after being hit by a car and one of his legs needed to be amputated. Several of our cats are on medication for ailments such as renal disease and thyroid conditions; Mittens is allergic to numerous items, including plastic. Due to skin issues we were able to have Dakota tested for allergies; he recently went to his furever home and his new family understands the need for continued treatment. Two years ago Rudy lost the use of his hind legs and was diagnosed with a ruptured disc in his back; two surgeries and a round of physical therapy later he is thriving in his new home. These are but a few examples of the medical care we have been able to provide to our precious babies.
Since the downturn in the economy our donations throughout the year have fallen and we are at the point where we will have to make difficult decisions regarding the medical care of our beloved animals. Currently Ben is undergoing treatment for nose polyps; he has not responded to steroid treatment and a biopsy has been sent to the lab. We are currently waiting on the results and are hoping for the best.
Would you consider making a gift to SMAWL which will be designated to provide medical care to our animals over and above the basics? A gift to our Year End Appeal is a way to provide for our animals and guarantee that they will have the medical care they need while we try to find them a furever home. Our goal for this appeal is $12,000.00; we believe this will provide for the continued medical needs of our beloved animals. Our updated website is scheduled to launch around December 15th and you will be able to watch our progress towards this goal on our new website.
We are thankful for all you do for SMAWL, and we hope our Year End Appeal is another opportunity you choose to support. As always, your gift is 100% tax deductible, and no gift is too large or too small. What great SMAWL miracles these funds will allow us to perform!
Blessings for a peaceful holiday season and a prosperous 2012!
Sincerely,
Katie Werner
SMAWL President
