Snowflake's Story

My First Weekend at My Foster Home -- Discovery
April 3, 2005

Foster Mom and Dad were able to spend much more time with me these two days. It poured down rain on Sat. Foster Mom put a blanket on me, so I was able to be out on the pasture for a few hours with Whitney, but spent most of my time in the stall munching hay. My appetite has improved significantly. I am eating almost 4 lbs of grain in the a.m. and again in the p.m. Foster Mom and Dad were busy cleaning stalls for all 5 horses since it was raining. I got brushed and brushed an brushed. It felt wonderful. I just dropped my head down and dozed off. Foster Mom said she thought I looked better already. She used sizzors to trim my tail to make it more even.....you can tell she's never been to beauty school.

Two nice ladies brought me some delicious grain. It is formulated for older horses like me. They brought me more hay too, so I don't have to worry about going hungry. Sunday I was able to stay out in the pasture more, with my warm blanket, even though it was muddy. Foster Mom even let me and Whitney graze in the yard, where the grass is better. When we are in the yard, we can touch noses with the other three horses. Mom thinks that if I get used to them slowly, that when she puts us together, it won't be a big deal. She doesn't want the others to start playing rough with me.

At first I couldn't stand it if Whitney was out of my sight. Now, when they take her away and I start to get hysterical, Mom just starts brushing me and I calm down. I can even stay in my stall at night while everyone else is out in the pasture and I don't freak out. I know I am safe here and I know I will get to be with Whitney in the morning. Mom says that brushing me before she leaves me in the stall is like reading a child a book before they go to bed. I am really starting to trust these people. I like weekends, because my foster parents can spend more time with me.
