Volunteer Network - OpportunitiesFoster Opportunities Available Have you been waiting for your opportunity to foster? There's no time like the present! Right now the St. Mary's Animal Welfare League is in desperate need of foster homes for both cats and dogs. Summer is always a big time for returns and surrenders as often people's summer plans do not include their pets. This year we are being hit doubly hard as the economy is taking its toll on people too. Please keep SMAWL in mind when talking to friends, coworkers and neighbors who may be interested in fostering, or even adopting. We NEED foster homes desperately! Here are a few cats who are hoping fur a chance to spend some time in a foster home just like yours while waiting for their turn at PETCO. One is Hewie. She was abandoned on Buck Hewitt Rd. on a cold winter day back in 2003. Fortunately for her a passerby noticed a plastic crate that had been sitting by the road on his way to work was still there when he returned. In the middle of an ice storm he thought he'd stop and pick up the empty crates. The surprise was on him when he found four eyes peering back at him. Hence our newest additions that cold winter day, "Buckie" and "Hewie." Both were long ago adopted. Unfortunately for Hewie her Happy Ending is not furever and is in fact coming to an end very soon. She has been loved very much by her family. However due to the wonderful economy we are living in right now, we are starting to see animals returned and Hewie is one of these cases. She is living in Delaware now, but will be making her way relunctantly back to St. Mary's on Saturday. Hewie is now about eight years old, and a declawed torti. We would love to be able to move right into a foster home or better yet a furever home. Do you know someone out there looking for someone just like this little lady? Her family says she's a very sweet snuggle bug and they're really struggling with this. Another is a three year old buff and white girl who was adopted from us as a kitten. The young man who adopted her, has had several family changes in the past year to include a newborn. They do not feel they have enough time to give to the cat. This little girl has been raised with a dog from the time she was a kitten. This gal still has a lot of kitten in her and just needs a home where she can be free to be a kitty. We also have several recent nursing mothers who could use a place to hang their litter box scoop while awaiting their chance at PETCO. Maybe your specialty is TLC kitties and you would like to take on the challenge of working with one of our cats who is currently living at our Adoption and Rescue Center and just needs more individual attention and time to blossom? WOOF WOOF......Dogs, did you say you wanted to foster dogs? There's no shortage of them either! Email Sandy at slbjgb2@verizon.net or Mo at bernsm@md.metrocast.net to ask about our dogs who currently need a foster home. Whatever your desire is, I'm sure we have a special four paw friend to match your needs. Barb |
